confession #000068

... or, i don't think i'm ready for this jelly

let me see a show of hands here:  how many of you wore jelly sandals as kids?  you know, those clear yet colourful plastic sandals which our mums used to make us wear to the beach, to avoid getting hurt if stepping on sea-urchins, sharp rocks or even worse, broken glass from the previous nights' barbecues. how many of us used to have lattice-patterned tan-lines on our feet because of them?

i hated them.  with a passion.

but like all things which were considered an abomination when we were younger, jelly shoes seem to be making a comeback. i remember a brief stint a couple of years back, but this time round, oh, the comeback is big. and i'm not sure i'm ready for this to be quite honest.

being a real sucker for new trends and always wanting to make a statement of some sort, even with my shoes (cue: chiara's my zarbun), i couldn't help but give these a try and i am like this close to getting myself a pair.  the thing is, i'm not even sure i would wear them.

since i'm a bigger fan of closed shoes as opposed to sandals, i would naturally gravitate towards the ballerina shaped ones, possibly with a nice big bow or other adornment such as those at ted baker or vivienne westwood.  the problem is, if i am to wear these in the typical maltese summer temperatures, i can see myself walking around, squeaking away as my feet start, well, 'glistening'. on the other hand, if i wear one of those 'invisible socks' to absorb the 'glisten', well, it kind of seems pointless to wear socks with something which is specifically designed to go sans chaussettes, no?
these jelly babies are calling my name ...
then again, if i fall for the jelly thong - flip-flops, that is - i would practically wear them only to the beach.  where again, a problem arises.  the usual 'foamy' flip-flops i tend to buy always heat up and feel somewhat mushy (and blistering hot!) whenever i wear them to head back home after a day in the sun, making it somewhat impractical to walk as they keep slipping sideways and heading towards a direction of their choice. god only knows how many times i've managed to twist my ankle in them.  i reckon that the jelly version wouldn't be much different.
the jelly shoe evolution

so i've got this little dilemma here.  of course, the solution to it won't solve any of the world's problems: there will still be wars, famine, political uprisings and economic crises i'm afraid. but at least my little mind won't be boggled on this any more.

have you bought any of these jelly shoes? how do you find them? are they as comfortable as they appear to be? let me know x
